Convert the E46 M3 from SMG to the 6-speed manual

Rather than chase NLA SMG hydraulic units and control units, owners convert to the 6-speed manual. A detailed DIY (originally from M3Forum, reposted on NA M3 Forums) says it is not much harder than a clutch job on jack stands. The key part is a manual-transmission bellhousing (the SMG one lacks the self-centering springs and detents) or a machined SMG bellhousing. Plan pedals, clutch hydraulics and coding too. The thread has a full BMW part-number list with prices.

Parts / numbers mentioned: 6MT bellhousing; 23111222979, 23311228393, 23142229113 (gear switch), Pentosin MTF2 83220309031

E46 M3 SMG pump motor dying: swap in the commutator and bearing from an E46 ABS/DSC pump motor

When the SMG pump motor's commutator wears through (it drops out of gear when hot and shows the cog light), one owner opened the motor and fitted the commutator from a junkyard E46 ABS/DSC pump motor of the same size. He also used that motor's bearing (identical to the SMG one) and cleaned and reused the original brushes. He called it experimental but successful. Others note aftermarket motors (Burkhart, MLR) wear the same way, and an old pump usually needs seals and sensors too.

Parts / numbers mentioned: E46 ABS/DSC pump motor (donor commutator + bearing); Burkhart, MLR motors

SMG pump removal from the top ↗

Owners explain that the SMG hydraulic unit can be removed from above without lifting the car; the pump harness connector is reached by turning the wheels to full lock, and the skid plate may need to come off.
