Repair / rebuildDifficulty: MediumSeveral threads agree

Rebuild the E36 M3 ZF power steering pump with BMW's seal kit (or a used S52 Z3 M pump)

The E36 M3 ZF pump (also used on S52 Z3 M Roadster and Coupe) is NLA, so owners rebuild the original with BMW's rebuild kit. Split the pump (13 mm bolts behind the pulley), replace the seals, and refit the vanes with the smooth edge facing outward: getting this wrong damages the pump. One owner found a low-mileage used pump from a Z3 M Coupe through car-part.com for about $150 plus shipping and rebuilt that. Leaks are also often at the reservoir inlet and outlet, not the pump.

Parts / numbers mentioned: ZF 7681955259; BMW pump rebuild kit (FCP Euro); Z3 M S52 pump
