E30 power top failed: run it manually or convert to a manual top

Owners facing big repair quotes unclip the top and tonneau drive motors and work the top by hand. To close the tonneau the last bit, they power its motor directly from a 12 V drill battery (one owner 3D-printed an adapter with a toggle switch). Another owner converted to a manual-only top but needed a straight used frame. This is a workaround, not a repair: the tonneau must be re-engaged when down so it cannot pop up. The thread covers the electro-mechanical power top; check which top system your car has before relying on it.
