E34 M5 (S38) power-steering hoses: rebuild the NLA feed line and pressure hose

⚠ High-pressure hydraulic line next to the exhaust manifold. A burst pressure hose can spray hot fluid onto the exhaust and cause sudden heavy steering. Only a professional crimp is acceptable on the pressure side, keep the restrictor, and have a hydraulic shop and a mechanic verify the finished hose before driving. On the M5 the pump also feeds the self-levelling system.

The SLS-car feed line 32412226277 and pressure hose 32412226390 are no longer available new. Owners reuse the original hard lines and end fittings and have new hose fitted: clamps are acceptable on the low-pressure feed line only; the high-pressure hose must be professionally crimped with the internal restrictor kept.

Difficulty: Feed line: intermediate DIY. Pressure hose: hydraulic hose shop required.

Feed line 32412226277 (low pressure, reservoir to pump)

  1. 1
Put a drain pan under the pump and drain the reservoir. Owners do this by removing the return-line banjo bolt at the pump.[reddit.com]
  2. 2
Remove the line. Either take it to a hose shop or cut/chisel off the old crimp collars yourself and push new SAE J2076-rated power-steering return/suction hose of the same inside diameter onto the barbed ends, secured with clamps. Clamps are only acceptable on low-pressure lines. We found no source for the hose ID: measure the original.[r3vlimited.com]
  3. 3
Refit using OE-type clamps 16121180242 and 32111131345 as shown in the catalog diagram.[mfans2.com]

Pressure hose 32412226390 (high pressure): professional re-crimp only

  1. 4
Remove the hose. Keep the banjo ends and the internal restrictor. Mark hose orientation and the clocking of the end fittings before it leaves the car.[westernradiatortnh.com]
  2. 5
Have a hydraulic hose shop cut off the ferrules and crimp new SAE J188-rated (1,500 psi or higher) power-steering pressure hose onto the original ends, reinstalling the restrictor. Alternative reported by owners: the shop splices in the restrictor section from an E30 325i donor hose (Rein PSH0619 / 32411134436). Owners report that losing the restrictor causes oscillation or noise.[m5board.com]
  3. 6
Refit with new A14x20 crush rings 32411093596 and, if corroded, banjo bolts 32416852469 / 32416852470. Use factory torque values from a manual: we have not found verified values, so none are given here.[mfans2.com]

Refill and check

  1. 7
Refill with the fluid specified on the reservoir cap or in the owner's manual, bleed (lock to lock with the engine running is general practice; unverified for the E34 M5), and check every joint for leaks at operating temperature. Leaks tend to start at banjo bolts or crimp fittings.[reddit.com]
